FORMER SOLDIER AND FRIENDS RELEASE VIDEO HONORING THOSE WHO SERVED IN VIETNAM

Carl Conge – Roger Kirby – Dave Gibson

In celebration of National Vietnam War Veterans Day, Mar. 29, retired US Army Captain Carl Conge and fellow songwriters Roger Kirby, and Dave Gibson have released a new video honoring those who served in Vietnam.

Conge (who was featured in Webhost Magazine http://webhostmagazine.rocks/carl-conge/ in February 2016) and his friends have knocked it out of the park with this one.

Gibson – who is featured in the video, and sings lead on the song that accompanies it – is an Academy of Country Music Award Winner who has penned hits for some of the biggest names in country music.

“These Days (He’s Just Tryin’ to Get By)” tells the story of a young man who was drafted, sent to Vietnam with the company that participated in the My Lai Massacre, and returned home a much different person than the one who left to fight in Southeast Asia.

It was inspired, in part, by Conge’s older Brother – a Vietnam veteran who passed away in 2010 due to health issues related to the exposure to Agent Orange, and by Michael Franklin – a close family friend who also served in Vietnam.

The color photographs of the My Lai Massacre that appear in the video capture what is considered by many to be one of the darkest moments in the history of the United States military.

Sergeant Ronald Haeberle – the Army Photographer who took those photographs in the early morning hours of Saturday, March 16, 1968 – was gracious enough to give Conge and the others permission to use them.

The majority of the other images that appear in the video were taken by photographers who were assigned to the Department of the Army Special Photographic Office (DASPO) during the war.

One of those photographers, Specialist 5 Robert Lafoon, acted as an unofficial consultant during the making of the video.

More About Carl Conge

Carl was born and raised in Rochester, New York, and has been interested in music ever since he can remember.

As a teenager, he would entertain the girls who lived across the street by placing speakers in his bedroom window, playing music, and mimicking the DJ chatter that he would hear between songs on the radio.

A few short years later, Carl started his own Mobile DJ business, and – in the years since – has entertained thousands of people at weddings, reunions, birthday parties, and the like. In the late nineties, one of his early dreams of being on the radio was realized when Carl was selected to appear as a Guest DJ on “The Drive at Five with Mike Vickers” on WBBF-FM. Today, Carl still has his hand in the DJ business, his real love is songwriting.

Carl wrote his first song in the seventies, and has been writing ever since. Over the years, he has been fortunate enough to write with some truly talented people, including multiple Grammy-nominated songwriter, musician, arranger, and producer Larry Dvoskin; Academy of Country Music Award Winner Dave Gibson (The Gibson-Miller Band); former Capital Records Recording Artist Don Mancuso (Black Sheep, The Lou Gramm Band, D Drive); and former United Artist Records Recording Artist Mason Tyler (Pookah).

In late 2014, Carl (who is a retired Army Captain) teamed up with fellow veteran Roger Kirby to write a tribute to those who served in Vietnam. The song, called “These Days (He’s Just Trying to Get By”, tells the story of Corporal James Johnson – a Vietnam Veteran who returned home a slightly different man than the one who left to fight in Southeast Asia. “These Days (He’s Just Trying to Get By)” was inspired, in part, by Carl’s older Brother Michael – a Vietnam veteran who passed away in 2010 due to health issues related to the exposure to Agent Orange.

Michael was a big fan of older country music, so when the song was written, they kept that in mind, and tried to write something that he would have enjoyed listening to.

“These Days (He’s Just trying to Get By” is currently the theme song for a radio show called “The Veteran’s Manual” which streams live each Monday evening from 7-9PM EST on Liberty Tree Radio (http://www.libertytreeradio.4mg.com).

The show – which is hosted by Vietnam Veteran “Machine Gun” Randy Phillips – encourages veterans to call in, and talk about their time in the military, their experiences in dealing with the Veteran’s Administration, living with Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), etc.

Late last year, Carl co-wrote a song called “Come Home” that is slated to appear on the debut album for Long Island New York’s most popular band, Hopefully Forgiven. The album is being produced by Carl’s co-writer, Larry Dvoskin.

When asked about his musical influences, Carl said “The Beatles were a tremendous influence on me.

To this day, I still consider them to be the band by which all others are measured. I’ve also been influenced by the Eagles, James Taylor, Cat Stevens, Gilbert O’Sullivan, Jim Croce, and others like them.” When asked what current music he listens to, he said “I like John Legend, Ed Sheeran, The Zac Brown Band, Brad Paisley, and Tim McGraw. No doubt, there are many others, but those are the ones that immediately come to mind”.

We also asked Carl to tell us about some of his favorite songs.

This is what he said: “Wow. Tough question. I mean, there are so many good songs out there. I’d have to say that Don McLean’s “American Pie”, Gilbert O’Sullivan’s “Alone Again (Naturally)”, John Legend’s “All of Me”, Ed Sheeran’s “Thinking Out Loud”, and Joe Diffie’s “Ships That Don’t Come In” would all appear near the top of my list”.

Carl’s songs can be heard by following the links appearing below. A number of other songs are also in the works.

Lyia Meta

Singer, songwriter and visual artist with a penchant for speaking through song and turn of phrase, where freedom is found through voice that’s “big, bold and beautiful”.

This Malaysian born spent her childhood in a small town in the state of Malacca where her music and art were the mainstay of her everyday life.

Her debut EP ‘This is Lyia’ which garnered 6 nominations from Voice Independent Music Awards (VIMA) in May of 2016 saw her win the award for BEST OVERALL FEMALE ACT.

The debut offering which is described as “raw”, “organic” and “bold” is a reflection of her roots in rock, blues and pop.

She was nominated top 5 for Anugerah Industri Awards (A.I.M) for Best New Artist in 2016

Won Gold (Award of Excellence) for Best Rock Ballad from Global Music Awards, California in 2017 and has had her music played on independent music stations from United Kingdom (Radio Wigwam), Canada (The Rocker Chick Show -Progcore radio), California (Woman of Substance Radio) and a few selected stations in Europe.

In August of 2017, Lyia Meta won the award for Best Female Artist from Radio Wigwam (UK).

A visual artist, she spent her early childhood admiring her father’s paint brush fly across huge expanses of canvas. Each stroke left her in awe and wonder at the magic he wove. As a singer and songwriter with a penchant for speaking through song and turn of phrase, her freedom is found through voice that’s “big, bold and beautiful”.

Born in Malacca, West Malaysia to a Malaccan Portuguese father and a Sinhalese-Chinese mother, she doodled, sketched and painted from as far back as she could remember. After school she pursued distance studies in Interior Design, got married, had a kid and fell in love with the stage. Making music her life, she sang in various parts of the peninsula but always kept her art close to her heart. Fast forward and she is still singing but her art has become more and more a channel for which she can express herself.

She paints what she feels, how she sees life and when she needs to. Her relationship with her art is as fiery as the artist herself.

She loves every moment spent in front of the canvas and the peace it brings when it nears completion.

“I am a self confessed romantic. I paint on influences and emotions that hold sway over me. It is a journey within a journey that opens strange doors. Often the path leads me to places I would have never dreamt of seeing or discovering.” says Lyia

“Lyia is a true Artist in every sense of the word. She not only has a beautiful voice which resonates through her music, but she is also a very passionate Artist that paints on Canvas, and other forms work media. I am excited to feature this amazing lady in the magazine because she brings it all to the table and I know she is very proud to have won awards for her music and will definitely get my vote next time she is nominated” ~Randy Lockhart – Editor In Chief

Doctor Paul

Doctor Paul, as he’s known to his fans, is a troubadour in every sense of the word. After appearing on NBC’s The Voice in Season 9, the Doctor has been traveling on his “I Ain”t Done Yet” tour, bringing his music to as many new fans and friends as possible.

From the Gulf coast of Florida, to Music City and all points in between, fans of his acoustic solo performances have fallen in love with his utterly original interpretations of the work of songwriters great and small.

In his deft hands familiar songs are rendered fresh, as though being heard for the first time, and lesser-known songs are thoroughly owned and yet oddly familiar.

The Doctor has collaborated with some of the great names in the business, and has recorded with some of Nashville’s top session players, but it is in his live shows that you’ll experience him as nature intended: Unadorned, accompanied by only his acoustic guitar, his unique, powerful voice carried by a flurry of finger-picked notes that pass like mile markers on a very heady trip.

So here is an invitation to join him as he takes you somewhere new yet familiar, and anyone who has experienced one of his intimate performances knows one thing for certain: You will both treasure the company.

Doctor Paul’s latest release, “The Old Home Place”, and others, are available at his web store at https://squareup.com/store/doctor-paul/

The Doctor grew up in New Jersey. An avid electronics experimenter, Doctor Paul’s first introduction to musical performance was building a custom amplifier for a friend who owned an electric guitar. Acquiring his first guitar in his early teens, Doctor Paul performed for friends at parties and barbecues.

Early musical influences included country & western, doo wop, R&B, soul, jazz, folk, and of course rock & roll. After a tour in the United States Army, Doctor Paul returned to New Jersey in 1971 and joined a group of friends in his first band as the lead singer and bass player.

Musical performance became more than a hobby, leading to a career in music playing acoustic guitar, acoustic bass, and electric bass in both solo and group settings.

Touring the United States throughout most of the 70’s and early 80’s, Doctor Paul met his wife, Dawn, in Tampa, Florida.

A musical hiatus followed for the next 25 years while they raised a family of five daughters.

Moving to the mountains of North Carolina in 2005 allowed Doctor Paul to reconnect with his musical past.

Mark Stone & the Dirty Country Band

Hailing from Minnesota, Mark Stone & the Dirty Country Band originated in 2012 as a solo project by Mr. Stone himself.

Since then, it has evolved into a full unit, comprised of Mark Stone (Guitar/Vocals), Todd Jameson (Bass), and Johnny Strutt (Drums).

Mark Stone on the first 2 EPs wrote and played primarily all the instruments himself (with some help from some other fellow musicians), which received some critical acclaim.

The song “Drink the Pain Away” was nominated for “Best Country Song” by I Love Music Awards.

The success of the song took the band down to Austin, TX to record the album, “The Sequel” at Music Lane Studios.

The band has been gigging regularly, putting out new music, and has performed at many notable venues and events across the country, such as SXSW (twice), The Red Fly (before their doors closed), Moondance Jamming Country Fest, amongst many others.

The band was also chosen as 1 out of 8 bands (from over 1,000 entries) for the Hard Rock Rising Midwest Regional Battle of the Bands.

With the band fully lined up and ready to take the country by storm, Mark Stone and the Dirty Country Band are currently continuing their winning streak and have no intentions of slowing down anytime soon, or at all!

The band released there newest EP “Trifecta” on April 1st, 2017.

They are currently working on a new release “For Stories” to be released Spring of 2018.

Peter Nigido

Australian musical artist ‘Peter Nigido,’ welcomes the release of his ambitious new single titled ‘Turn A Page’.

It comes alongside the release of his debut EP ‘The Art Of Turning A Page’.

He is releasing his new Single Turn a Page from his new EP The Art of Turning a Page after Easter and his album a month or 2 later

Peter’s electronic and acoustic instrumental style challenges the minds of its listeners and moves to feed their soul.

The music is a combination between the organic and the rhythmic synthesized world.

Dynamically created, with lyrics set to explore themes of relationships, challenge and personal growth, he drives an awakening of hope and optimism.

The focus of ‘Turn A Page’ is about self reflection, and becoming emotionally stronger.

He challenges the listener to become kinder and to think before acting on emotion.

Demanding attention, Peter’s music is melodically composed expressing symbolic imagery. Its metaphoric charisma will surprise all.

‘The Art Of Turning A Page’ pulls no punches. A Provocation of strength and boundless creativity signifies the passion Peter displays in his writing and performance.

Peter’s journey is one of truth, depth and emotional maturity.

For the first time Peter places himself in the vocal front line, exploring warm breathy sounds that are unconventionally structured and provoking.

Gentle guitar chord progressions, resonant bass lines and pulsating keys, makes his music surprising and un-restraining in every way.

Peter leaves no stone unturned in his search for musical nirvana. T

here is a conscious musical effort to set one self free. A chemistry of illusions will endeavour to help one search for that freedom and aid to bring back the beauty of honesty and love.

He is releasing his new Single Turn a Page from his new EP The Art of Turning a Page after Easter and his album a month or 2 later

Peter Nigido is definitely one of Australia’s upcoming musical artists which will challenge the attitudes of many. He is something not to be missed.

The Ohio Weather Band

The Ohio Weather Band formed in a small town in Ohio before the members even realized it. Corey King (guitar/vocals), Derek Strata (bass/vocals) and Ray Lumpp (percussion/vocals) were friends long before bandmates.

Corey had written songs for a solo EP (“Ohio Weather”) and asked his friends Derek and Ray to perform on the record as bass player and drummer, respectively.

At that point, the band was established. In 2014, The Ohio Weather Band released their self-titled, debut album.

Most of the album was recorded by the group, though they managed to salvage a few guitar and drum tracks from previous recording sessions. The album was produced, mixed and packaged solely by the band.

This served as a local and regional launching pad for OWB: local magazines and newspapers supported the album and honored it as one of the best area albums in Cleveland, OH and Canton, OH. Shortly afterwards, The Ohio Weather Band went on a self-booked three week tour around the Midwest and Eastern US.

“Crooked Light” is the sophomore release by The Ohio Weather Band.

The album was, again, self-recorded in various locations including a garage loft and the basement of a house in Akron, Ohio, in which the members currently live.

Unlike the group’s last, self-titled album, “Crooked Light” was not completely an in-house project. Spencer Martin joined the team to co-produce and co-mix the album.

The result is an album with a fresh sonic perspective and evolved songwriting. Lyrically, the album projects the thoughts and experiences from skewed perspectives.

Regarding the songs, Corey says, “It seems like there are simple, obvious meanings to the songs, but there’s something bigger behind it.”

The Ohio Weather Band is excited that their new  “Don’t Try” EP is set to release in spring 2018.

Brenda Burch

I have been following Brenda for quite sometime now through social media. She has an amazing voice that not only captured my attention but also made me want to listen to more of her music and I realized then that it was only fitting that I take a closer look at what she had to offer as an Indie Artist.  I read the post in facebook that said she had received the   for her work as an and I knew at that moment she is going to be featured in the magazine. Brenda has so much to offer and I can only hope and pray that people reading this article will feel the same as I do because we need more people like Brenda in our lives.

More about Brenda

Described throughout her career as the little girl with a big voice, Brenda Burch has captivated audiences in the United States, Europe and Asia with her energetic performances, rich Country vocal style and ability to connect with a crowd through the emotive story of a song. Sharing the stage with Darius Rucker, David Archuleta, Neal McCoy, Diamond Rio and Collin Raye, among many others, has given her the chance to convey tales of love, life, loss and strength in her music to thousands of concert-goers.

Her newest EP, Sparks Will Fly, not only sparked attention in the USA, but it caught fire in Europe resulting in a big win for Brenda at the Hotdisc Country Music Awards. The only artist to take home 2 awards, she was the winning recipient of the New Horizon Award for Most Successful International Newcomer and Best International Single for her title track, Sparks Will Fly. “I was blown away to win both awards,” said Brenda. “Overwhelmed is an understatement. I’m so grateful for my family, friends, fans and all the wonderful DJs playing my music!” To hear Brenda’s full acceptance speech, click here.

The award-winning EP is compiled of six compelling songs that range from a tongue-in-cheek spin on dating life (“Sparks Will Fly”) to following your heart (“No Better Time”) and having the courage to love what matters most (“Take Me Back”).
